Default Books for beginning player?

Thanks,

Besides the advice already given in this thread, I've got two
additional comments.

First, Silman's "How to Reassess Your Chess" and "The Amateur's Mind"
are not beginner's books. They're for intermediate players who are
already good at tactics and want to gain the knowledge of positional
play necessary to reach expert and eventually master level.

Second, I was looking at books in the store recently, for the first
time in a while, and I noticed that GM Susan Polgar and Paul Truong put
out a book called "Teach Yourself Chess in 24 Hours". Flipping through
it, it looks like a pretty good beginner's book, but I didn't read the
whole thing. Anyone have any comments on that one?
