Why not spend 50,000 dollars starting something better? Set up a Dunkin
Donuts in your town, with a chess board printed on every table. Supply
the chessmen, perhaps the least expensive, hollow plastic ones. An
all-night coffee shop is less likely to get robbed if there are people
playing chess. Insomniacs and third-shift workers, on their night off,
don't have much to do in the wee hours of the morning.

If somebody wants to quit drinking, chess is a much better activity
than going to the bar.

The tables should have a chessboard printed on them, but not letters or
numbers, because the players might alternate colors without having to
change seats. The chessmen would fit in a container that stows neatly
under the tabletop, when chessplayers are done, so the table can be
used by non-chessplayers.

It is true that cops routinely visit coffee shops, especially when
that's the only bathroom available besides the police station, [I do
not criticize them for using a public restroom, nor for using the
toilet plunger for its intended purpose.] but they won't arrest you for
making an illegal move.

The shop would have to sell chess sets, so customers will be less
tempted to steal them. If your shop makes money from coffee and
doughnuts, plow back your profits to open more shops. You will have a
ready clientele to start up your Confederate States Chess Federation or
whatever your rebel federation will call itself.

This would be an excellent way to say, screw you, USCF, we don't need
you to play a game inherited from antiquity.
