Want to get better so I can play USCF tournaments. Just to win a
point or two, or three, would be great.

Unless you feel that you'll be discouraged by losses, why not start
playing tournaments now, if there are any close to you? Going through
your games with stronger players (or getting the computer to point out
your tactical errors) is a great way to learn.
