Everyone else should take the 3minutes to sign up for this service and
post your playing name online so we can get on with this. I think it
will be great fun!

I'm registered as "Mike Murray". There's somebody else already there
as "mikemurray", which might cause confusion.

Hmmm. It looks as one can *only* play email chess on this site. I
prefer instant gratification, such as on playchess.com (my favorite
time controls are 3-2 and 1-3, but 5-0 and 4-0 are also OK).

Yeah, its just e-mail games. I've played a few hundred games at the site
[300?], and seems like the fastest time control is 2 days, but if you play
lots of games sometimes you can play 'as live' when another player is
playing the same set of games against you, and you can waste a few hours
progressing half a dozen boards.

I've played people from Montenegro, Iran, New Zealand, India &c. Sometimes
you can join an open tournament as well, which often has wide ranges of
ratings, and as many as a dozen players. I think the sign-up default will
start you at 1400. There is one feature in tournaments to be aware of - if
your opponent doesn't make a move in time, you have to claim the result,
otherwise the game is scored null, or you even lose points - I'm not very
clear how that works.

Therefore you have to scan your open games which is a bit laborious if you
play a lot.
