"I doubt he's in real danger," an aide told me. "Everyone in Russia
knows his name, but voters only take him seriously at chess. The
Kremlin can use him to pretend that democracy is still alive and well
in Russia."

Another survey disputed Kasparov's popularity, and was to the effect that
young Russians don't even know who he is.

Frankly I'm shocked that Putin hasn't killed Kasparov already. I mean
Kasparov is one of his biggest, most well known critics. Do you guys
think Kasparov will be suicided by the Russian government?

Kasparov is protected to some degree by his fame in the West. Sort of
like a modern day Andrei Sakharov. None of Putin's other critics can
count on that. Kaspy wasn't touched during the last demonstration and
the cops moved in only after he left. Putin has to worry about an
unprecedented reaction in the West if he is eliminated. But he's still
in danger because everyone knows Putin is silencing his critics. If
conditions are "right," he could knock off Kasparov, too, as a
"statement." Depends on what else is happening.
