If it is true that the manufacturer did not allow
for the human playing as Black, I would be
quite surprised. Perhaps you just need to read
the instruction manual?

In any case, the color of the pieces is not the
real issue; what matters is that you switch who
gets to move first. Suppose you decide that
Ivan should play 1. e4 and Sanny's reply was
going to be ...e5; just play the following
sequence: 1. e3 e5, 2. e4, and the position is
identical except for the move numbers will be
off by a half-move from a normal game. No
doubt there are tricks with Knight maneuvers
to lose a tempo without a single pawn being
touched.

Better still, just learn algebraic notation and
the problem is solved *permanently*, for life.
:D

I am playing this out from the "dead lost
position" which occurred after 11. ... Bh4+
to see what might happen with a top-level
program defending as Black. Interestingly,
the same tactical idea of deflection has
occurred many moves later in a different
position. White managed to hang on to
his two-point advantage for a long while,
but made no real progress. Now the two
programs strongly differ as to the size of
White's advantage, the weaker one saying
it is big, the stronger one saying it is small.
It is simply incredible what a REALLY
strong chess program can do, no matter
how hopeless things may look to us!
