DEAR LARRY PARR

In a message dated 3/3/2008 writes:

Thank you for the link to The Bobby Fischer That We Loved.
by Larry Evans. I don't subscribe to Chess Life and might
never have found it on my own.

Fisher certainly was an exceptionally sad
case in life -- so talented and brilliant and yet a
flawed diamond. After all that deranged Fischer
worship, Evans was refreshingly honest.

I especially appreciated Evans' question when he
discussed the impact of computerized chess:

"Why would anyone today devote a lifetime to mastering
a game from which it's almost impossible to earn a
living when a hand-held device can find the best move
in a split second?"

I also liked his answer to Frank Brady at the end
of the article: "I try to make each game a work of art."

I ask you, what better reason is there to devote one's life?
