Chess Ratings
Ray Gordon, creator of the "pivot" wrote:
The Elo system is not perfect, and requires further adjustment in any
individual form of competition. For example, in basketball, K has to be
scaled so that the ratings can generate pointspreads, and one must use
"replays" or re-rating the past month or so, with caps, to account for teams
who suddenly improve or decline, as the system is too slow to catch it.
The problem with Elo and chess is that chess knowledge is not fixed, so a
zero-sum system makes no sense. The "expanding rating universe" you see
with the methods used is actually more accurate.
The Elo system is not zero-sum.
