Grant, I stand corrected. Thank you. His name is Anand Vishwanathan, as
stated; his father's name is Vishwanathan Krishmamurthy.

Paul Rubin replied:

But I think that's still wrong. Anand's name is Anand. He has just
one name, sort of like Suharto (hmm not such a flattering comparison).
Anand's father's name is Vishwanathan, who also has just one name.
That's the normal practice in that part of India.

When Anand writes down "Anand V." or "Anand Vishwanathan" that's just
to help prevent confusing him with another Anand, sort of like
"Aragorn son of Arathorn", but "Vishwanathan" is not actually part of
Anand's name. Ganesan (another Tamil-speaking chessplayer who has
just one name, and who interviewed Anand) wrote an article a while
back explaining this.

So, in other words, Anand is Anand - nothing more than that.

So what about his giving his father's name as Vishwanathan Krishnamurthy? His
mother's name is given in many places as Sushila Vishwanathan (wife of
Vishwanathan?).
If, in the interview, he says his name is Anand Vishwanathan, is he saying in
effect that he is Anand, son of Vishwanathan?
And if he has only one name, shouldn't he be identified in the chess world, by
FIDE and others as simply Anand? Nothing more, nothing less. Isn't it time to
get rid of "Vishy"?
