Tom,

Look at was http://www.chathurangam.com/learnchess/, which describes
the method of mating with a king and rook. It uses advice from
Capablanca to decide whether to move the king or rook.

Most basic endgame books also explain how to mate with a king and
rook. Two come to mind: "Basic Chess Endings" by Fine and
"Pandolfini's Endgame Course".

BTW: I found the web link by google searching on "mate" "king" "rook"
"chess".

I've got that mate down pact now. The fundamentals seem to be
using the rook to seal off real estate, and making useless rook
moves on a rank/file to force the king to move to two spaces to
the side of your king. King chases king until they are on the same
rank or file, then the rook gets more real estate. When the king
is at the edge, mate. As for K,B,B, vs. K, I've pulled it off with
one hint. Of course ICC tells you how many moves you are away
and that is a major cheat. You can go from 7 moves to mate to
11 in a single boner move. I can't believe it's called one of the
"basic mates".
