Firstly, Fischer's "cruel exile" is Fischer's own fault. Secondly, it
really *is* a shame what has been done to Bobby because he did it to
himself. Fischer is an embarrassment to our great game. I wish we

p.s. It never really became clear to me how obnoxious Fischer really
is until his refusal to play Karpov in the world championship match.
I maintain Fischer was so afraid of losing to Karpov that his
universe-sized ego wouldn't let him play...Fischer loves chess? He
loves his self-image more. (Fischer *had* to play an over-the-hill
Spassky in '92 because he was broke and needed the money. Otherwise,
he would have stayed in Pasadena with his surrogate mother, imho.)
