Why did Fischer leave chess? by Seymore4Head
Do you think it was fear of losing? Greed? Mental illness? I am going with Greed. I think he thought he was in such a high demand he should be getting paid much more than he was actually worth. While he was considered the best chess player of the time, I don't think chess would bring in the money he was asking. Especially when he was making demands for the cameras being turned off and the...

Using a chessboard to play chess by Seymore4Head
I have been playing chess so long using a computer playing on a chessboard seems unnatural. My guess would be that Magnus Carlsen and other masters also play more games on computers than chessboards. I have been watching some of Calsen's chess games on Youtube where they use a board and a clock. You would think both players would prefer using a computer where the clock is controlled...

Bonin's Greatest Games of Chess by samsloan
International Master Jay Bonin is probably the most active chess player in the world of his strength. He plays an average of 140 rated tournaments and 700 games per year. He first became a master in 1975. At age 57 his rating has declined about 100 points. His FIDE rating was 2419 in 2000. Now it is down to 2319. He has played in 3391 USCF rated tournaments since November 1991. His USCF rating is...

Knight's Pawn to--Ahh, Why Bother by mimus[_2_]
While the von Neumann minimax theorem establishes the solvability of all two-person rectangular games, even those in which, say, a 1,000,000 by 2,000,000 matrix is involved, there still remains the task of considering more general games-- in which there may be more than two players and each player may have several moves, etc. However, it turns out there is no new theoretical difficulty,...

USCF Board Continues to Misinform the Members about the Proceedingsin the Swiss Court by samsloan
The delegates were NOT informed of what this was all about. They were only told that the arbitration proceeding was started to insure that FIDE followed its own rules. I was at the meeting in Irvine where this occurred, so I know what the lawyer said. The delegates were not told that the purpose was to kick Kirsan off the ballot as a candidate for FIDE President and to kick Beatriz off the ballot...

USCF Board Continues to Attack and Misunderstand FIDE by samsloan
You may have known how to play the game of chess for a relatively long time, but the fact that you do not understand that Karpov and Kasparov both have bad reputations shows that you know nothing about the history of the game. Karpov became "World Chess Champion" in 1975 by questionable means. He manipulated the vote so that the match would be played under rules that he knew would be rejected by...

Response to Goichberg's Election Recommendations by samsloan
The increase in TLA fees was one of many major mistakes by George DeFeis. The most noteworthy fatality of these fees was Manhattan Chess Club that stopped advertising as a result and then went out of business and closed down. However, it is wrong to blame Redman entirely for this. Again, you were not there, I was there. At the 2001 Delegates meeting in Framingham, DeFeis strongly defended these...

On the USCF Issues Forum, Reasonable Limits Should be Placed on attacks by Particular Posters on Particular Candidates I am strongly opposed on censorship, especially during election seasons. I have been a victim of censorship myself as during the 2007 election campaign I was not allowed to post in self defense whereas my opponents were given unlimited rights to attack me as often as they wanted...
