You shuold access these newsgroups through Outlook Express. Very easy and
convenient. Then, you can easily save posts of interest to you.

Good luck!

Google has just introduced a new format. You can see it at
http://groups-beta.google.com/group/...chess.politics

Perhaps I am just not used to it, but I do not like it. You do not see
the links clearly and you only see a few recent posts. Right now, I
want to find the postings of a few months ago where Leroy Dubeck
demanded the resignation of Beatriz Marinello. I want to use that in
my court case, since now Dubeck has reversed and supports Marinello,
but this new format I fear will make it harder for me to find that.

What does anybody else think about the new format?

I considered the delay a useful curb. I hate to think how much more
time I might have wasted if I had been able to carry on arguments in
real time.

It's not a waste of time if you're arguing with Kevin, Bill Brock
and/or TMB. I haven't seen Bill and TMB for a while now though so
that's a lot of time saved already.

Oh yeah. You can see your posts instantly also through Outlook Express.
However, now that google is also real time, I prefer goggle.

Why would anyone not simply use their email program's newsreader?

Google is
great, but who needs their groups?

Three reasons.

At the office, I can't use the newsreader, because the company firewall
keeps out that traffic. Don't know why, maybe it's just a bug that
will soon be fixed, but ...

At home, I can use the newsreader, and I often do, because I get more
recent messages that way (because Google takes a while to post things).
But I usually use Google before going to the newsreader, because it's
easier (see third reason, below).

The second reason is, that using Google, I can post using an old,
obsolete e-mail address. Spammers are out there trying to send
hundreds of messages a day to , and it
doesn't get to me, because that e-mail address doesn't work any more,
and it doesn't even forward to my current e-mail address. Using the
newsreader, outgoing stuff would have my current e-mail address on it,
which I hope to never again do. So I don't use the newsreader to post,
ever.

The third reason is, I found the old Google format to be convenient.
It was easier to deal with than the IE5 newsreader stuff. Yes, they
have about the same functionality, but different clicking and
keystrokes, and I definitely preferred the old Google format. If I
tried to go into detail about the difference, it would bore you, but
it's meaningful to me.

I was dismayed by the new Google format. I have figured out how to
make it nearly as usable as the old, but I'm still having problems, and
it's just a big annoyance.

Bill has been busy running for ICA President as a write-in candidate,
but I rarely have much reason to argue with him when he is posting
here. He is one of the most decent and rational people I know in the
chess community and I agree with him on many issues.

Arguing with Kevin always feels like a waste of time, but it is
probably a necessary evil.

Arguing with TMB is undoubtedly a waste of time although it is
occassionally entertaining.

Bruce, are you having any trouble posting? Google Groups wasn't able to
reach the old
address, so they refused to let
me post. I had to switch to a real email address before I could post
again.
