Why would anyone not simply use their email program's newsreader? Google is great, but who needs their groups? The issue is that Google has 20 years of searchable Usenet archive, and they have screwed up the ways in which users can access it. You can't get the same info now that you could before. People who haven't bothered maintaining their own archives, because Google was already doing it, are now somewhat screwed. |

Spam Scone wrote: Bruce Leverett wrote: The second reason is, that using Google, I can post using an old, obsolete e-mail address. Spammers are out there trying to send hundreds of messages a day to , and it doesn't get to me, because that e-mail address doesn't work any more, and it doesn't even forward to my current e-mail address. Using the newsreader, outgoing stuff would have my current e-mail address on it, which I hope to never again do. So I don't use the newsreader to post, ever. Bruce, are you having any trouble posting? Google Groups wasn't able to reach the old address, so they refused to let me post. I had to switch to a real email address before I could post again. I had some snafu, but it was minor, and I don't remember the details. The bottom line is, I never had to type my current e-mail address or have e-mail sent to it. Odd situation this is. But I am blessedly spam-free. Now all I have to do to unclutter my e-mail every morning is remove the dozens of irrelevant messages sent by my co-workers :-) |

The only thing I like is the instant posting. I have no use for binary
downloads, so I guess I can get rid of my Usenet account. Other than that, I think it's ugly. And stupid looking. Leshaun Fossett http://leshaunfossett.cjb.net/ |

At first I was shocked by the new format.
I signed up for the beta version anyway :-) And either Google quickly has improved its new format or I have selected some nice options, I like the new format and the new situation (fast feedback: I sent a post, it showed up immediately, and the puerile Mr.Kh's response to my post even faster :-). It seems to me that Google is attempting to squeeze more advertisements, but not too bad. And Google is making up for it by using a smaller font. There are several nice touches. Auxiliary info shows up only if you click on the respective button. Otherwise it is not displayed. The names of the authors show up in the headers of the posts in nice, clear way. And a big one: many sloppy posters quote entire posts. We have even a clown who creates whole threads and quotes himself progresivelly: e.g. in the fourth post he quotes all three previous posts; in the fifth all previous four, etc. Now he is harmless because Google covers up for his cretinism, it hides the whole quoted text--it getas displayed only when you click on the proper button. I agree. I love it for the same reasons!
