Kasparov Attacked by FAN by Froggy
Chess Champ Smack Down - Chess is a contact sport, just as former champ Garry Kasparov. Kasparov, an outspoken critic of Russian President Vladimir Putin, was not injured last week when he was hit with the chessboard after signing it for a young man at an event in Moscow. According to Kasparov's spokeswoman the assailant told the chess champion: "I admired you as a chess player, but you gave that...

Crisis in the USCF by Sam Sloan
The USCF was formed in 1939 and I first joined in 1956. Since I have been a member, there have been three kinds of boards: 1. The Bad Boards 2. The Terrible Boards 3. The Even Worse Than That Boards However, in all these years there has never been such a nasty, mean sprited and utterly destructive board as the board we have now, which

Has Tim Hanke Gone to Iraq Yet? by Sam Sloan
Has Tim Hanke Gone to Iraq Yet? Apparently, not many have noticed that in late January Tim Hanke posted to both the chess groups and the Latin Language Groups (he teaches Latin in high school) that he intended to go to Iraq and fight for the honor of his country. Since then, he has made only four more postings. His last posting was on February 10, 2005 and compared Susan Polgar to Adolph...

$201,466.60 Moving Expenses to Date by Sam Sloan
Fantastically, the USCF website reports thart the moving expenses to Crossville to date are $201,466.60 http://www.uschess.org/org/govern/finance/moveexpenses.pdf This has led George John, a candidate for election and a supporter of the move, to state that the USCF has "saved" $41,008.78 because the estimated expenses are $242,475.38 Funny how I adhere to the old-fashioned idea that spending...

Proposed Candidate's Statement for June Chess Life - Please Comment by Sam Sloan
I have been told that in order to win one of these elections, I have to provide the votes with happy talk and not say anything negative. That is why I keep loosing. I have this unfortunate habit of telling the truth. The real USCF news is bad, vastly worse than most can even imagine. If you go back and read my candidate's statements from past years, you will see that every word I wrote has been...

* Chess Clock by ChessSlave 2000
What is the best (money is no object) electronic chess clock? What electronic chess clock is most often used in rated tournaments? Should I get an analog chess clock as well? Enquiring minds want to know!

What Really Happened to My Candidate's Statement by Sam Sloan
What really happened to my candidate's statement, which has now been confirmed from two independent sources, is that my statement was not late. It was in production in Chess Life Magazine, until Beatriz Marinello ordered the Chess Life staff to remove it from the magazine. The claim that it arrived late was just a cover story to conceal what really happened. Sam Sloan

Let the USCF Die! by Chuck Connors
Once everyone stops paying dues and stops participating in USCF rated tournaments, sooner or later somebody will get the bright idea to set up an independant Rating organization. The USCF needs to receive a deep cleaning out from the top to the bottom, and all new people who are honest need to take over. If that is not going to happen, then the USCF needs to die, and another organization will...

Sandra Kimura Sloan prepares for the World Under-4 Chess Championship by Sam Sloan
Sandra Kimura Sloan prepares for the World Under-4 Chess Championship While I am typing this, my daughter Sandra Kimura Sloan is sitting on the floor next to me playing chess with herself. I did not teach her how to play. She is learning by watching other kids play. As she moves the pieces around, she keeps saying "Check" and "Bobby Fischer", words she must have learned from the other kids, as...

Did Steve Shutt miss the deadline?? by Sam Sloan
Did Steve Shutt miss the deadline?? Several interesting facts have come out of this Candidate's Statementgate Affair. An e-mail was sent to the candidates setting February 10 as the deadline for submitting a statement for the April Chess Life. However, several candidates either did not receive or did not read the email and therefore missed the deadline.

Stop paying USCF Dues by Joseph Chambers
It is clearly evident that the only way to evict all of the rats from the USCF is to stop supporting these miscreants with money. Don't renew your membership in the USCF. Don't pay dues. Stop buying anything they sell. Once the money is gone, the rats will jump off the sinking ship. Hopefully someday there will be people involved in the USCF who do not act like mobsters, and who can be honest to...

Amature chess question about ratings by Rekottop
I am a US Sailor and a bunch of people on my ship would like to have a tourney. We want to keep track of our chess rating between us all but no one knows how to calculate it. Could anyone direct me to a place that talks about how to calculate a rating for people and possibly how to put on a small tourney between about 20 to 50 people? Thanks so much every one. Bill
