Basilisk chess is an attempt to increase complexity in Fide-chess and a response to the ongoing routinization of chess. It includes the possibility to play a standard Fide-chess game, anyway, by a voting procedure. The Basilisk was a monster cannon used in medieval times. After having jumped any piece, the Basilisk can slide and capture like a queen. However, if no jump move exists it's...

Let me start with a brisk question. Imagine your are brilliant chess talent originating from Northern Ireland. Which federation will FIDE allow you to play for? The home one? Obviously not, that one isn't FIDE member. Great Britain, UK? None of these actually exists. England? They won't accept your application. The answer actually is Ireland. Yes, different federation, different country. An...

The problem today is the mechanizing effect of theory and computers among professionals. Nobody has argued that Fide-chess, as such, is about to die, but *creativity* risks perishing. If a professional is going to devote his whole life to this game, then creativity is to prefer before a routinization of the game. Routinization is a phenomenon we see in all enterprises that initially were brimming...

Susan Polgar organized a tournament with ten players that nobody ever heard of but all of whom have very high ratings. She deserves full credit for that. All she had to do was say that it was "one of the strongest tournaments ever heard in the USA" and everybody would have agreed. But her publicist had to say that it was the "strongest". That is where the trouble lies.
