What effect does endgame knowledge have with long term planning
earlier in the game? Is it the primary guide to long term strategic planning in the opening and middlegame?

I remember "Larry the other Evans" changed his openings He changed to get into the endgames he played best. This change got him the IM title he had not been able to achieved. Terry
