3094 is not his rating, of course. It's the number of neurons engaged
when Werner is playing chess. The other 200 are busy when he's posting
to rcga.

Another silly game with atrocious annotation. There isn't a player
rated above 2200 who would claim that "4.e4!!" is anything other than
a mistake. Black equalizes easily (and maybe even has the initiative)
after 5...e5!

GD/Guestdestroyer/Werner is a joke.

could you explain this to the less talented amongst us?

Sure. After 1.d4 d5 2.c4 Nf6 3.cxd5 Nxd5 it is generally considered
that white keeps a nice edge after 4.Nf3, which prevents ...e5 ideas
and prepares e4, when the knight will have to retreat and white can
manage his central advantage.

After 4.e4 Nf6 white has to deal with his e-pawn. After 5.Nc3 e5
black has central counterplay. For example, 5.dxe5 Qxd1+ 6.Kxd1
(6.Nxd1 Nxe4 and the threat of ...Bb4+ doesn't give white time to push
the knight around) 6...Ng4 and black is already comfortable. If white
tries 7.Ke1 intending 7...Nxe5 8.f4, black can simply play 7...Bc5
with nice development. Or 7.Nh3 c6 8.f4 Bc5 and black's easy
development and white's bulky structure gives black plenty of
compensation for a pawn.

Dear Mr. Bauer,

I always play 4 Nf3 there, but the error was not obvious even to Alekhine.

Here's the game, Alexander Alekhine - Frank Marshall, Baden Baden 1925:

1 d4 d5 2 c4 Nf6 3 cxd5 Nxd5 4 e4 Nf6 5 Bd3 e5 6 dxe5 Ng4 7 Nf3 Nc6 8 Bg5 Be7
9 Bxe7 Qxe7 10 Nc3 Ncxe5 11 Nxe5 Qxe5 (11...Nxe5 12 O-O O-O 13 Be2 Be6 =
according to Alekhine) 12 h3 Nf6 13 Qd2 Bd7 14 Qe3 Bc6 15 O-O-O O-O 16 f4 Qe6
17 e5 Rfe8 18 Rhe1 Rad8 19 f5 Qe7 20 Qg5 Nd5 21 f6 Qf8 22 Bc4 Nxc3 23 Rxd8 Rxd8
24 fxg7 Nxa2+ 25 Kb1 Qe8 26 e6 Be4+ 27 Ka1 f5 28 e7+ Rd5 29 Qf6 Qf7
30 e8=Q+ (announcing mate in three moves) 1-0

GD/Guestdestroyer/Werner is a joke.

But he's not too amusing.

"The advantage of seldom joking is that people remember the joke, and it gets
repeated."
