Hi,
I've been looking at some games in a PGN file and searching for
duplicated with the chess database program scid.

http://scid.sourceforge.net/

I have 48 pairs of duplicate games, but in many cases the two duplicates
have different ECO codes. One of the codes would have been set by ICC,
the other I assume from scid. (It has the ability to add ECO codes. It
seems to add different ones to ICC though)

I'd like to permanently delete one of each duplicate pair, but I'd like
to know what ECO code is more accurate.

The following EC0 codes get applied for the *exactly* the same game moves.

A09 and D06 (not even same letter - see games 194 and 196 below)
A20 and C20 (not even same letter - see games 57 and 61 below)

Usually these start with the same letter on the ECO code, but there are
exceptions to that as you can see in that list above.

The game numbers above refer to those in my database. They will mean
nothing to anyone else, but they are useful if anyone wants to comment
on a specific one as I can look it up.

I realise you can arrive at the same position from various move orders.
I guess that might be part (all) of the problem.

Anyway, any comments on the following (and no, I don't expect you to
correct them all, just enlighten me as to why there are these differences.)

I've got two books on openings

1) "Nunn's Chess Openings" by John Nunn, Graham Burgess, John Emms and
Joe Galleagher.

2) "Batford Modern Chess Openings", by Nick de Firmian.

but neither of them have ECO codes in them. Is there any decent
reference to these codes? I can find 1001 on the internet, but are not
sure of a good reference. Clearly there would appear to be ambiguity on
some of my games, so I don't know where to trust. Is ICC okay ???
