Round 4 at the Essent tournament: 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bb5 a6 4. Ba4 Nf6 5. O-O Be7 6. Re1 b5 7. Bb3 d6 8. c3 O-O 9. h3 Nb8 10. d4 Nbd7 11. Nbd2 Bb7 12. Bc2 Re8 13. a4 Bf8 14. Bd3 c6 15. Rd5 Qe1 46. Kh3 Kf8 47. Rd7 Rg3+ 48. Qxg3 Qh1+ 49. Kg4 Qxe4+ 50. Kh5 1-0 For a moment I thought Mamedyarov had resigned in a winning position! 50...Ng7+ 51. Kg5?? h6+! But 51. Qxg7+ followed by 52. Bh6+ mates. Amazing that the king needed to be at h5 to make this critical variation work. I was sorry to see that Mamedyarov's creativity was not rewarded in the end. A fascinating position after Black's pawn sacrifice at move 28. Meanwhile, Polgar beat Sokolov with a nice kingside attack, moving into clear first. LT |
