Please, tell me that I am wrong
(but do it for the right reason :-).

The ICC Weekly Newsletter â—? Vol. II - issue XVIII
â—? Friday, May 25, 2007 â—? shows the position
from Topalov - Sasikiran after black's 31st move.
I understand that Topa wants to win the tournament
and so he wants to win the given game but he
doesn't have anything in this position. So he makes
a ridiculous sac: 32.Nxh5?? after which he should
lose the game. Except that now Sasi acts like a
patzer. He plays 38... gxh5?? thus allowing the
infiltration by white queen 33.Qg8.

Instead, Sasi could simply play 32... Kxh5,
attacking white pawn on h4 with his queen and king.
White would be lost.

Later Sasi plays 38...Qe7?? This time the "??" is
awarded by ICC, fine. But ICC claims that 38...Qxd4
was the only safe move, while I would say that
38... Qh6! was much better.

***
Sorry, if I am wrong. Let me know.

Regards,

Wlod

My computer shows a simple refutation also but Saskirian has never
been in this position before so it had to be purely psychological.
Topalov probably saw a simple refutation too but give him credit. He
took the risk and it paid off. Topalov played in pure Emanuel Lasker
style.
