I think the program is playing reasonably well,
although I must admit that I somehow missed the ultra-obvious 7.Bc4 killer. I saw the game you were rook down, Still you won. That was a good luck or your Plan. Recorded Game: http://www.getclub.com/playgame.php?...806&game=Chess Bye Sanny Play Chess at: http://www.GetClub.com/Chess.html |

That was a good luck or your Plan. Well no, I did not "hang" my Rook, if that is what you are asking. In the August 2007 issue of Chess Life, which I have been reading lately, there was an article called "The Umstead Attack" where a weak player like myself drew a grandmaster. In that game, NM Umstead played a different opening, but I was amazed that he was able to attain a winning position with such "quiet moves" as Q-d2 and Qf4. Though he mucked up the easy part and only drew as a result, I found the idea compelling, and adopted it in my game at GetClub. The alternatives were unappealing since Black was up a pawn and my own King was certainly not safe. Even the endgame looked horrible for me, so why not sac' my Rook for a promising attack? It worked out (just barely) and I won. A very interesting experience for me, and I don't think I will be playing the King's Gambit much anymore as I don't like it. Even a GM Tal would not be comfortable if you took all the pieces in a bucket, shook them up and then dumped them randomly on the chess board, and that is how I feel, to a certain extent, about this opening. I prefer positional play. In one of my games at ChessWorld, my opponent played a Pirc Defense and I was able to pull off almost exactly the same kind of trick as in the Umstead game: I checked him with N-e7, he played ...K-h8 (only legal move), I sac'ed Rxh7+, he captured my Rook with his King, I checked with my remaining Rook at h1, and he resigned because he must interpose a piece after which I will capture it and then mate his King. In effect, not only do my pieces coordinate (almost) perfectly, but his serve to block the key squares his King needed for an escape route. -- help bot |
