The smith-morra gambit is completely garbage and is easily refuted.* Nunn in Nunn's Chess Openings suggests a great line.* basically play an early a6, e6,d6 nf6 and nd7.* after bc4, play b5 and fianchetto the bishop.

"Total garbage"? Nice joke.

I find it quite tough to deal with actually.

One question though what's the advanatage of going 1 e4 c5 2 Nf3 d6 and then 3 d4 cxd4 4 c3 moveorder?

To sidestep d5 possiblity right?

e4 c5 nf3 d6 d4 cxd4 c3 ? nf6 ! and white has no good way to coninue, e.g Bd3 protecting e4 but black is better.

In this situation White still can play a (pseudo) gambit, namely,
4.Bc4!? and after 4...Nf6 5.Qxd4 and then for example 5...e6
6. 0-0 a6 (...Nc6 7.Qd3) 7.Be2 Be7 8.c4
with attacking chances for White.

PS for the rest i don't think the Smith Morra is refuted,
there is a comprehensive up-to-date sub-chapter in my book
about the Smith Morra (besides some other 1.e4 gambits):

(five stars on Amazon)

and the paper version (including a comprehensive index at the end)
