Engine Test Position (English A33) by
Martin Brown
I was analysing an opening position with multiple lines displayed in
Shredder and Rybka and observed some curious jumps in the evaluation
function depending on the parity of side to move. I ran Shredder for
about 24 hours and Rybka for 4 days. The position is from the English
opening A33 :
r1bq1rk1/pp1p1ppp/2n1pn2/8/1bPN4/2N3P1/PP2PPBP/R1BQ1RK1 b - - 0 8
With black to move. Conventional wisdom...

Nomorechess Suggestions implemented at GetClub. by
Sanny
Nomorechess suggested me that GetClub Chess should look for Defence
moves and also look ahead when something is captured or King gets
Check.
His technique was implemented. But it looks like its depth has gone
very down. Earlier it used to go upto 6 level deep now it goes till
only 2-3 level deep.

What happened to this newsgroup? by
Rob
Probably a stupid question, considering the current state
of all newsgroups.
But anyway...this used to be a place where you could
find some interesting and serious analysis. Now you
have jokers trying to make money online with their
crappy chess programs and advertising their silly
games, and the usual Sloan and Chess One bs.
Any listservs or groups for somewhat serious players?

Sam Sloan beat USCF Master Richard Koepcke in 10 moves by
samsloan
Since we have so few cases of contested races in small
states, I don't know if we can definitively say whether or not it is
easier to get elected from a small state than from a large state.
The best example of the problem this would create is Mike Nolan
himself.
Mike is from Nebraska, a state with only one delegate slot.
Yet, for some unknown reason, Nebraska has produced more chess

Castles, mate (Helpmate problem) by
Amarande
This occurred to me today on FICS, when someone needed an example of O-O
mate.
Premise: Starting from the initial position, construct the shortest
possible game so that the final move is a mate delivered by castling.
I could quickly come up with a solution in 9:
1 f4 f5 2 e4 fxe4 3 b3 Kf7 4 Bb2 Kg6 5 Bc4 Kf5 6 h4 Kxf4 7 h5 Kf5 8 h3
Nc6* 9 O-O#

Ray Cheng, 'Practical Chess Exercises' by
Manuel Wehrmann
I own Ray Cheng's "Practical Chess Exercises"
(Wheatmark 2007).
It' a very good book with 600 "Lessons from Tactics to Strategy".
Or according to IM John Watson (USA):
"If You study this book,
you will acquire the most important chess skill of all:
the ability to think for yourself."
Now I arrived at exercise #155.

Very nice game. Capa has a very clean game. Doubled pawn on e file?
Interesting. SO doubled pawns is not always a bad thing?
