Fine-Reshevsky Knight vs Bishop Semmering 1937 by Nomen Nescio
This game ended in a draw in which Fine had knight and g- and h-pawns against Reshevsky's bishop. In BASIC CHESS ENDINGS (page 215 of the original edition), Fine gives an analysis including a missed win before the knight plus two pawns vs bishop position was reached. Averbakh seems to agree that the game was drawn after that point. Anthony Saidy reviewed the new edition of BCE on Jeremy...

The Cochrane Gambit by Tim Eberly
Hi folks, I was wondering one day what would happen if Black took on e4 right away in the Cochrane gambit. I found that White has a number of winning lines. Some lines were surprising. Black has to really watch himself. Here is some analysis. 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nf6 3.Nxe5 d6 4.Nxf7 This is the Cochrane Gambit 4...Kxf7 5.d4 Nxe4? I wanted to see if I could exploit this early capture. If I can come

Fritz wrong Crafty wrong Shredder right? Human lost in a maze.... Interesting......... by Don't Panic
Weirdest thing I have ever seen in computer chess or just normal chess. 3r4/1k3P2/2n1qPP1/p3P3/1p5P/2B3R1/6BK/8 w - - 0 45 This position arose after moves of a game between Fritz 8 and Shredder 8. I was watching the game and could not believe that white lost. Black has just played 44...Bb2

Stoenwall from QGD by levellerman
Hi, I have a question for the Stonewall's theory specialists. I do not play it but I vaguely know that a usual way to get the Stonewall while avoiding the messy anti-Dutch gambits (1.d4-f5 2.e4,Nc3,h3,g4,Bg5 ..) is via Slav ( Meran) or QGD : 1.d4-d5 2.c4-e(c)6 3.Nc3-c(e)6 4.Nf3-f5..

Another endgame, where did Black go wrong? by Toni Lassila
After 31. Ke4 Black wins a pawn by trading down to the knight endgame. Surely it must be won for Black? He has majority on both wings. I wasn't sure my strategy of blockading the center would work but somehow it did. So where exactly did Black go wrong? I think 40...f5+ looks like a win but maybe there is some defensive idea I've missed.

my first draw against deep fritz8 set to (1650), how'd I do? by jb
I've only played it a couple times and it hasn't 'rated' me yet. When I have it analize my game, I see all the anotations as it goes, but when it's finished I cant get the comments to scroll past the 19th move(first page), I can mouse wheel through all the moves but the anotation stops at the first page. dont know what I'm doing wrong. here's my game:

Sam Sloan's Best Games of Chess by Sam Sloan
Here are four of my best games of chess. The first is probably the best game I ever played, with a fantastic queen sacrifice followed by smothered mate at the end. My opponent was a woman chess player who often changes her married name. Her name at the time of this game was Gina Wolski. She is also known as Gina Sanchez. The second is a game I beat Grandmaster Walter Browne. It was published in...

Why are super GMs scared of the Zaitsev Variation? by Ivan
I have noticed that when Anand and Kramnik try to play the Zaitsev variation with Bb7 against Leko, he does not want to play the mainline with d4. Instead he wimps out with playing d3. What is the deal? Is the Zaitsev really that powerful of an opening for black? I thought Kasparov had already demonstrated methods to tame this opening during the Kasparov-Karpov contests of the 80s. thanks,
