Think like a Patzer by Henri H. Arsenault
Kotov wrote the book "Thkink like a Grandmaster", but there are a helluva lot more patzers in this world than grandmasters, so I thought I would write something like Kotov, explaing the train of thought of a patzer (me) playing a game. This blitz game was played this week (I swear it's true) on ICC. It was a Fischer 2-12 blitz game, whcih may or may not explain some of the incredible...

Best endgame book? by eraser@popup.ipop
Hi All I have Reuben Fine's Basic Chess Endings which while good, is old notation (at least copy Ive got). Alos have Soltis's GM secrets: endings. What is considered the best endgame book? I want it to be comprehensive and in modern notation.

Kotov doubly cooked! by Henri H. Arsenault
Kotov's "Think like a grandmaster!" is a great book with a lot of good advice, so it is amusing that I found the very first diagram explanation to be cooked not once, but twice: not only did Kotov miss the winning move, but the move he gives as correct leaves White with an inferior position! The position is 1brr1k1 1b3pp1 pp2pqnp

Chess openings for kids - especially black response to 1. e4 by Kenneth Sloan
(Bryan Norman) writes: I was considering openings to teach my kids that are beginners. In particular, as black how to respond to 1 e4. BZZZT! Beginners need to learn endgames and mating positions and GENERAL opening principles. Any coach who tries to teach beginners "how to respons as black to 1. e4" is seriously misguided. (I apologize for my blunt language, but...

Chessbase.com Takes Major Credibility Hit by Graeme
chessbase.com, makers of the Chess Base database software and other products, has a bizarre opinion piece on their website. In the middle of a page of otherwise objective news reporting about the Fischer story (http://chessbase.com/newsdetail.asp?newsid=1852), there's a plea from one Susan Grumer to George Bush, asking him to pardon Fischer on the grounds that... The "Quaker Chess Challenge": an online "puzzle" of sorts by Brandon
I've posted a rather odd "Chess quandary" on the Web, and I wonder if anyone would care to share their thoughts on it. Particularly, if anyone knows how to set up Fritz, Junior, or Shredder to play against one of its internal engines from this setup, it would be appreciated. But your thoughts need not touch on computer chess at all: http://www.100bestwebsites.org/quakerchess.htm More about...

This combination is one from a CD I have - I do not have the original printed volume Informator 68, and wonder if anyone has it, because it appears to (me to) be faulty on this CD. I would not normally worry about this but I spent twenty five minutes trying to solve it last night.... then could not see why the solution worked...... position...

Anyone familiar with using Chessbase 7? How do you do this? by KNMGlasgow
This will probably seem like a trivial question to an experienced user, but I would seriously appreciate some help. I have been using Chessbase 7 for a wee while now but I still don't know how to do the following: I put in a new game, and if I right click I can search for the same position or a novelty in my Megabase or Informator databases. But then how do I incorportae that information into...

stalemate as a loss any better by Tim923
I'm trying to remember if a stalemate position in checkers is a loss for the player unable to move on his turn. I think it is. Would making stalemate a loss in chess be any better?
