Is this the French or a King's Gambit?? by
Who cares anyway
I played a game on ICC today as black where I got rather lost in the
opening. Following 1. e4, I played 1...e6 with the intension of
playing the French Defence. But my opponent did not reply with the
usual 2. d4, but instead 2. f4, which rather took me by surprise.
Afterwards he did not seem too keen to discuss the game (despite he
won), but said it was the King's gambit. Yet when I stuck the...

Fritz 8 Help by
Matt Nemmers
I've recently had to re-install Fritz 8 on my laptop. I go to File, Print,
Publish Game to publish my games on my various websites and after it asks
for a filename and I select a directory to save the files to, it acts like
it's publishing. After about 20 seconds, I get this pop-up message:
"Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library
Runtime Error!

Please analyse this uncommon opening by

Hi, I am not sure of the name of this opening, maybe just Queen's Pawn, but would like to know what you think about it from each
side's perspective, thanks.

Help needed by
Tantale2
I have posted this message recently in rec.games.misc but haid no answers.
Maybe here I will have some help.
I worked hard recently to improve the presentation of the studies on my site
(Benko, Timman, Kasparian, Kubbel, Smyslov)
Click on the chessbox at http://perso.wanadoo.fr/jmrw/index.htm
I would like to know if there are still imperfections with the presentation
wich can vary with the OS...

Interesting QGD variation...please analyse by
Samik
I played this game with Black, and was very disappointed to loase
because I failed to punish White's inferior choice of opening.
Could anyone please analyse and tell me where I went wrong

Game from 2004 Interservice Chess Championships by
Matt Nemmers
Drew an expert for the first time last week at the Interservice Chess
Championships. Not a very pretty game, but one I'm proud of nonetheless. I
would like to hear some comments on it -- especially about the endgame. I
know 56.Kf2? is bad because it allows black to infiltrate my side of the
board for a perpetual, but if 56.Kf1 instead, does white have winning
chances with the extra pawn? All...

Bobby Fischer is the greatest and he is playing today by
byrne
Fischer's chess teacher Jack Collins says:
How strong was Bobby? I remember the 1966-67 New Year's Eve party at our
home. At the time Bobby was competing in and winning his final U. S.
Championship. Several grandmasters were present, and there was plenty of
eating and drinking. By 2 a. m. Bobby wanted to play some chess, and he had
in mind a certain strong international master. But Bobby had...

Naka favored to win title! by
Ray Gordon
Okay, it's an EATING contest, but still!
A champ is a champ is a champ.
GM = Gimme More! (food, that is!)

"I ain't gonna play Sun City" and the world's best chessplayers should not
play Libya, which banned the Israeli players from competing. Shame on the
Americans who went!

TRY IT, SURE TO WIN by
Eagleint25
THIS REALLY CAN MAKE YOU EASY MONEY!! IT
WORKS!!! A little while back, I was browsing
through newsgroups, just like you are now,
and came across an article similar to this
that said you could make thousands of dollars
within weeks with only an initial investment
of $6.00! So I thought," Yeah, right, this
must be a scam", but like most of us, but I
was curious, so I kept reading. Anyway, it

FIDE Drug-Testing Solution? by
Ray Gordon
How about this?
Test all players for drugs, but don't punish anyone.
Instead, use the results as the basis for an academic study of whether or
not any drugs can enhance chess performance.
This would let FIDE probe every player, and maybe advance humanity a bit.
Might even lead to a few breakthroughs.

has anyone seen these openings before? by
john
im sure these openings are positionally weak, so if someone can point
out a huge flaw in them, other than being weird, id appreciate it.
1.c4 e5 2.f4 exf4 3.d4 or
1.c4 d5 2.f4 dxc4 3.e4
both of which carry the idea of the bishops taking the c and f pawns,
establishing a two to 1 or possibly 2 to none pawn center. any
thoughts? has this been analyzed before in major works? thanks.

Thanks for explaining this. I had often wondered how it could be that

Often I do, I have a few hours of website work every week after the event.

Chess Exam and Training Guide: Tip #7 by
Igor K
Successful chess training consists of two parts: an accurate
evaluation to identify your current level and immediate needs and
subsequent design of an appropriate training plan that is well
structured and includes the list of suitable books and training
software.
In my upcoming book Chess Exam and Training Guide
(http://www.ChessExam.com) I attempt to tackle both.
Beginning May 13, for the...

Eye-Opening Opening play by Ni Hua in FIDE World Championship! 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nf6 3. Nxe5 Nxe4 by
Isidor Gunsberg
Check out the opening played by Ni Hua (GM from China, rated 2587).
He had the misfortune to get paired against his compatriot, Ye
Jaingchuan in the 2nd Round of the FIDE WC. Thus, the last two reaming
Chinese players had to play each other, and one would be eliminated.
The match between Ni and Ye was tied after the first two "slow" games.
So, they played 2 rapid games. Then 2 blitz games with...

Gata Kamsky really is Back!! by
Sam Sloan
Gata Kamsky really is Back!!
Any doubts that Gata Kamsky has returned were erased last night when
he showed up again to play in the weekly New York Masters tournament.
After a ten-year absence from USCF Chess, Kamsky has now played two
weeks in a row. It seems obvious that Kamsky is preparing for next
week's World Open in Philadelphia, with a $180,000 guaranteed prize
fund.
Kamsky was still off...
