Chessbase 9 - Layout ?!! by Locksley O. Young
I was trying different layouts on Chessbase9 for viewing Chess Media Files. But now, I cannot get it back to the original layout with the board in the left half; the notation window at the top right and the Video and multimedia controls at the bottom right. Help!!!!! I could always go back to factory settings... but I do not want to loose my other customizations for color, pieces, board...

game annotations by help bot
Okay, so now I am reading the September 2007 issue of Chess Life... First off, I notice that GM Andy Soltis tries to prove that a couple of grandmasters do not cheat by showing some positions where they played moves which don't match those selected by computers. This is a really dumb approach, since a player could cheat and be considered a cheater even if he only cheats let's say 1% of...

Request to chess book authors - make PGN's available! by Dave (from the UK)[_2_]
This is a request to anyone who has wrote a chess book, or is thinking of writing one. Could you please make the PGN files available for the games in the book? Despite sites like Chessgames.com, ChessBase, TWIC etc, it is often difficult to find the PGNs of the games in many books. In a recent book on the Smith Morra gambit, "The Morra Gambit: A dynamic weapon against the Sicilian" by...

Rook and Pawn vs Queen in endgame. by Dave (from the UK)[_2_]
I played the following game on ICC - not a particularly good game, as there were lots of unforced errors. But the ending is interesting. Is this winnable by White (which I was) or is it a draw? (In essence, I had a queen and my opponent a pawn and rook.) I know the 5-piece endgame tablebases would have this, but I don't have them on this computer. But I was more interested in the...

Blundercheck Annotation Quirks by Martin Brown
There have been a few threads recently about game commentaries that seemingly depend too heavily on engine annotation without the application of some common sense. I recently played a quick sparring game against Shredder 10 where the engine annotation by blundercheck was found wanting. Strangely even though all the engines in infinite analysis or deep positional analysis could easily see that...

game annotations by help bot
I am still (yes, STILL) reading the August 2007 issue of Chess life, and have finally made it to GM Pal Benko's column (page 56). He starts off with a rapid event where GM Kramnik had White against GM Leko in game 5. A rather unusual sequence of moves led to an early trade of Queens, and I suspect, a heavily-analyzed (by GM Kramnik) position. White starts off with the superior pawn...

game annotations by help bot
Now I am reading about the 2007 Mtel Masters event, game annotations by GM Ian Rogers. There were special rules for this event which prevented players from taking lazy draws, as grandmasters so often do, and it seems to have worked; plenty of games were fought out, not just given up for dead after a random home-cookin' move failed to net a huge advantage. In fact, the article gives several...

game annotations by help bot
Once again, in reading the August issue of Chess Life magazine I have run across some bogus annotations. This time, the game is from the 2007 Chicago Open and the annotator appears to be Elizabeth Vicary, using Fritz, etc. In the game between grandmasters Gagunashvili and Dmitry Gurevich, the latter is hounded for his mistake in an earlier game against GM Shabalov in another event. As far as...
