Dvoretsky/Yusupov books by
Ivan
Hi,
Are these books worth buying? I have not heard of either of these
authors: Mark Dvoretsky and Arthur Yusupov. Who are they?
Which are of these books are worth buying:
Book 1: Endgame
Book 2: Tactical play
Book 3: Strategic Play

Free USCF membership for TDs by
Ivan
I think the USCF should give free adult memberships (w/ chess life) to
all tournament directors that run 10 or more tournaments each year.
I believe that TDs in general are the backbone on US chess since they
organize and run tournaments. Also the tournament rating fees provide
a large chunk of the USCF revenue. Therefore, we should reward our
TDs for their hardwork by giving them free...

sicilian kan by
Sandy Breon
I have heard that the Sicilian Kan is considered to be an easy opening to
learn as black. I am considering using it, but from the games that I've
seen, the question of where/when to advance the d-pawn is a difficult one.
If it is played to d6, then wouldn't this become a Schevenigen structure? If
the d-pawn is played to d5 then white is able to push e5 and attack on the
kingside. Being a...

Tactical study by
Mogath3
A friend of mine asked me how I study positions. I said that I set them up on a
board and sit and stare at them until something starts to click. If it doesn't,
I reveal ONE move for each side and try to figure it out from there.
I have about 2000 index cards with nothing but the position and the side to
move on them. Thats it. I do NOT put the theme or the conditions of the
position on the front...

Let me respond to Sam Sloan. First things first.

banned from the Friday Rapids, without so much as a hearing to defend
myself.
By the way, Friday Rapids is dwindling. Leif Pressman said they

Rook and pawn endgame - analysis requested by

At the Florida State Championship this past weekend, I ended up down a

white: king on g3, rook on a5, pawns on d3, e2, f3, and g4
black: king on g6, rook on h1, pawns...

What to play against 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bc4 Bc5 by
Joerg Moormann
Hi,
I need your advice what to play at this point.
At the moment I play Queen Pawn openings, but I want to play 1.e4 in
the future (too).
But what to play against 3... Bc5? c3 and d3 seem a little bit dull.
About Moller attack there was an interesting post here some days ago.

USCF ratings under-rated? by
TruthXayer
Hi,
Are USCF ratings under-rated? In a recnt tournament, I found many
young players ratings like 1100/1200 but clearly playing at 1600
levels?
Is this the general trend or an exception?
thanks,

Why do some people play 1. d4 or 1.c4 ??? by
Joshua B. Lilly
But Richard Réti said "After P-K4, White`s game is in its final throes."

Bobby Fischer once said that "1. e4 is best for test"
And it seems he might be correct....it does allow two pieces to
develop and you can castle on the king side faster.
