chess study plan by Sandy Breon
I have had a chess teacher now for over a year (about 15 months). When I first starting taking lessons, my USCF rating was 900. Now it is 1322 (ICC = ~1600 blitz), although I haven't even played OTB in a few months. It is probably higher than that now. In the beginning I tried to supplement my chess teacher's teaching by reading a lot of different kinds of chess books, but that just created...

Chess fundamentals by Capablanca by Damir Ulovec
Then i'ts error in translating this book to my language. Txnks Tom. "skoonj" wrote in message ... My version of the book (Cadogan Algebraic, page 7) says that 1. g5 draws due to 1...g6. This seems correct. "White can win by 1. f5. Black's best answer would be 1...g6. (The student should work this out)."

why do GMs charge so much by Ivan
I don't understand why GMs charge so much for lessons. It's not like the average person can afford $60 an hour. I guess they are still communist and think about making as money as possible at one time. If they were capitalist, they would lower their rate to $40/hr and make more money. For example, getting paid $40/hr for 10 hours is much better than working $60/hr for 5 hours. Plus they...

Cochrane Gambit, two game variations by Fernando
Below you can find the 2 games with some comments on some of the moves. I have choosen 2 games won by black (in both games white is Ballon, F) even though my Cochrane Gambit gamebase contains more winning games for white. If you play this opening, make sure you don't sit back as white trying to develop pieces. It's an edge on play to justify your choice of opening. Both players have to beware...

The Morra gambit has a bad reputation, I know it has been discussed in this group extensively. These are some lines which are good for Black apparently:

Identify Openings by Tiger88
I play a lot of internet chess on FICS, usually using Winboard or Chess Machine. I'd like to learn the names of the openings that my opponent and I are using. Ideally, I'd like to find some program or add on that would show a little window. As the game progressed it might indicate something like "White-Queen's gambit" or "Black-French Defense". I'd like to see the names, not ECO codes. The...

Human insight by Claus-Jürgen Heigl
"Tailgunner(BernardZ)" wrote: Has any study been done on whether a weak player with a strong computer helping him is much better then the strong computer alone. If they act as a team is there any significant increase in rating? About 10 years ago, there were experiments by the mathematician Ingo Althöffer who used two different computer programs. Play the weak or not play at all? by Ivan
Hi, There is a local chess club that meets every week and most of the players are much weaker than my playing strength. I have played every single player and can beat them in both blitz and long games with ease. I was wondering if it is a good idea to keep going to this club or if it in reality I am doing more hurt to my chess since all i am doing is playing much weaker players. Should I...
