Kasparov refuses to continue Simul game in Chicago! by Andreas Walkenhorst
On 30 Jul 2003 15:34:24 -0700, (Scott) wrote: Though I generally agree with most posters on this thread that the reaction of both was ok, I'm still puzzled by Kasparovs reaction. I mean he still is the stongest player in the world, and such a kind of patzer with about 2080 he should be able to kill even drunk and blindfolded, though playing a simul. I would really like...

Improving Players' Lists by I.M. Provement
These lists are very informative and thus helpful for improving players, such as myself. Have you ever heard of the maxim: "Attack yourself and defend your opponent first, before you attack your opponent and defend yourself"? This would apply to looking ahead before you make actual moves, and not apply to making moves on the board. Who would really make a move to weaken his/her own position...

Vienna Game after 2...Nc6 3.f4 exf4 4.Nf3 Bc5 by Fred Galvin
On Tue, 12 Aug 2003, Mike Ogush wrote: As I was adding the Vienna Game to my opening repertoire for white I noticed that after 1.e4 e5 2.Nc3 Nc6 3.f4 exf4 4.Nf3 Black has an unusual move, 4...Bc5, that seems to get good results. Only 10 games out of the 23,000+ in my collection of Vieena games reached this position; White won 3 and Black won 5 for a 60% performance for Black. When...

am i wasting money on books? by Ivan
It seems that a lot of people tell me that they got better from playing and not reading any books. Or maybe just read 2-3 books. what is the deal? How come so many people say you need books to get better?

Need help identifying/analysing two (simple ?) pawn endgames. by Dan Wulff
Hi! I have come across two positions, which are claimed to be wins for white, however I cannot seem to find any way to win the positions. Also I have no idea where they came from, only a sort of code suggesting that they are part of a test suite or some other collection. Here are the games, in FEN/EPD notation:

Vienna Gambit question by chicagochess2003
In an old game against Matanovic the great David Bronstein once tried, after the standard Vienna Gambit moves 1.e4 e5 2.Nc3 Nf6 3.f4 d5, the unusual 4.d3. This move is trickier than it looks, as the correct reply is the not so obvious 4...exf4! Bronstein got nothing after 5.exd5 Nxd5 6.Nxd5 Qxd5 7.Bxf4 Bd6 8.Bxd6 Qxd6. NCO gives this game and line (=/+), and a few other side lines after 4.d3 as...
