Engine puzzle position by Martin Brown[_2_]
I have stumbled upon a position where quite a few engines - I thought at first it was just x64 types but Fritz 10 also sees the same phantom "Good move" which evaluates as a draw where none exists. The position is hopelessly lost but that isn't the point. Something is wrong. I found it analysing a lost game where there was a clear and bizarre discontinuity in the evaluation function that...

Cannot get notation by SolomonW[_4_]
On older versions of Fritz GUI, I used to be able to print a game with scores and notation! ?! !? etc. So I would get something like. 13. BC4? or 18. NC3 d6! I think I also used to be able to get an evaluation for each move.

Mac FICS chess client Kibitz -- updates by [email protected]

International Chess Master Jay Whitehead Has Died by [email protected]
I was working registration at The World Chess Festival in 1988. A young chess master on the way in to the opening ceremonies approached me with an embarrassed look. "Can you tie this for me?" he said and held out an ugly, argyle necktie. I hauled him in a corner behind a potted tree, faced the wall, and discretely tied it around my neck. I slipped it off, slipped it on his, tucked it in and...

Drawn position (?) that Stockfish 7 can't see is drawn by Derek Profts
1q6/1Pr2k2/1R2p3/3pPp1p/3P2pP/4P1P1/1R3K2/8 b - - 14 59 I believe that this position leads to a draw with correct play. Stockfish 7 64 bit has been crunching away at it for 48 hours or so and assesses it as -1.58 This is an endgame where White has a strong passed pawn but the material balance is that White is down a rook for a pawn. Schematic thinking tells me this is a draw. Stockfish has...

Recommended chess clients for beginners by Warren Post
The public library I administer wants to promote chess to our target audience, youths 12-25 years old with no previous exposure to the game. I have no budget to buy chess sets or instruction books, but I do have at my disposal our four public use computers and one iPad. A quick web search turned up more possibilities than I could possibly evaluate. Nor have I any experience with teaching...

David Howell Rating Problem by samsloan
David Howell has just won the British Championship, so now is a good time to discuss the problem with his USCF rating. This case came up as a very serious matter when I was on the Executive Board of the United States Chess Federation. David Howell's USCF rating was 1871 in 2000. Five years later when now a grandmaster he came back to play in another US tournament.

Fritz 14 64bit overheating by Seymore4Head
I have an I7. After just a few min playing Fritz 14 I start hearing a low alarm coming from my computer. Are there settings that will limit CPU usage. I can play Skyrim on full graphics and the machine doesn't overheat.

Mac FICS chess client Kibitz -- updates by [email protected]
And there really needs to be a special place for marketing this app for playing chess on FICS freechess.org on MAC OS X! Maybe a special Google Group or even better, to be listed with the other chess interfaces (like Raptor chess interface for MAC OS X , Babaschess , Winboard , etc) on the FICS freechess.org special link: http://freechess.org/interfaces.html Hope this helps others to find it...

What chess program should I buy? by Seymore4Head
I have just started playing chess again at chess.com. I want to get a computer chess program. I need a computer program that makes natural mistakes. My rating is about 1300 so I am far from a perfect player. What is a good chess opponent that can be configured to make mistakes?

Anyone working on chess playing algorithms? by R Kym Horsell
My eyes are still bright and tail relatively bushy. I've been away from chess programs for a "few years" but am back for another potential drubbing. (As they say on the stret, I only write the software -- I don't use the stuff myself). My thing de jour is quantum computers and simulations and emulations thereof. Although I haven't heard anything about playing chess using QC I'm sure there must...

Position by Position Computer Analysis by Gary[_2_]
Jef, Thank you for the reply. RE 1) with DeepFritz 8 i don't think you get very good evaluations, This analysis was produced sometime beginning as early as 2004 through to the present. I've had one or more machines analyzing more or less continuously throughout this entire period. Of course the earlier software was not so good by today's standards, but it was produced by engines which were...
