Default ARENA with SOS.4

I recently downloaded ARENAand SOS but I'm puzzled as to why the response
time is so slow. I have a fast modern Dell PC but this software takes a
minute or more to decide on a move in a routine opening. Whats happening?

You can download Pro-Deo, more than 2700 rating, successor of Rebel 12 with
better results on Pickard site or Shroeder Site

Thanks, CB. I actually had it on 15 mins for the whole game. Is there a
downloadable engine which is good on openings? Rob

It depends on the usage of an opening book and the time controls you
choose.

A chess engine has no knowledge of routine openings, just some
prerecorded moves in an opening book. And if you set time controls
to say 40/120, it will take its time to think whatever the stage of
the game.
