Having only modest scripting knowledge there is something that does not
make sense to me that I thought someone in this group could explain. It is more of an interface than chess specific question. It seems to me that the basic problems of writing an xwindows interface to game server are fundimentally the same for all board and many other games. Boards are drawn and updated, commands and responses are transmitted. etc. Now in chess we have a very stable mature interface in xboard. But I have noticed that the interfaces for other games, like backgammon and go, are less well developed for xwindows. I don't understand why this is so. Shouldn't we have a univeral internet board game interface based on xboard. I doubt that I would have the skills to write it. I just surprised that it has not been done. I suppose that the the code for xboard might not be modular enough for what I am thinking about. But even if it is not based on "xboard" why isn't there a framework for interface builders to start from. Perhaps there is but they don't wish to use it. I guess I'd just like to know if what I am suggesting is possible, or if my thinking is completely wrong regarding this. Thanks |
