Default Upgrade to Chessmaster 9000?

I've been running Chessmaster 7000 under XP, and I'm considering purchasing
CM 9000. I have two main issues with CM 7000: it crashes frequently in XP,
and it insists on using all available CPU cycles even when it is not doing
any analysis (like when I'm in a menu or doing a tutorial). I can increase
stability by running in compatibility mode, but then the text does not wrap
in the text boxes. The CPU thing has me baffled. What exactly is it doing?
So will I be happy with CM 9000 or should I look elsewhere?

CM9K with Patch 1.2 from http://chessmaster.ubi.com/ works well with XP.

Have you considered any of the more 'professional' chess playing programs?
They are mostly as reasonably priced.

I was looking at Fritz 8. Is it suitable for beginners?

I believe it is, as long as you can understand how the interface works. Just
becuase you are a beginner at Chess doesn't mean you can't take advantage of
the best quality titles available, so it will beat you, big deal, it will
beat Masters. Handicap it, set up postions, watch it play itself, practice
endgames, explore opening nuances, pretty much any program let's you do
that. CM9K isn't bad at those either, but it's not the best.

It's like asking if you should stay away from playing Madden NFL 2004 since
you've never actually played football before..it's a stretchy analogy, but
somewhat relevant.
