Default is there any doubt which chess engine is the strongest in the world....

I don't think so ....

The two flavors of Rybka Beta10d went 28-3-12 against all non Rybka
opponents - in this Game/5 with 5 second increment tournament. 3
Losses in just 43 game against some of the best chess programs in the
world - Shredder 9, Shredder 8, Fruit, Toga, Ruffian, Rebel 12 etc
etc. Rybka has leapfrog the all other chess programs, the likes of
which we have seen since the early days of chess programmming.

I'm ending the tournament now so I can start testing Beta 11.
All games were played with a common book , 256MB Hash, Pondering on and
in single cpu mode for each engine on Windows Xp64.

Note - I have no financial interest in Rybka --- I'm posting about
Rybka because it is so rare for a chess program to appear out of
virtually no where and dominate all other chess engines. Serious chess
players might want to take note of this new chess engine.

There are a number of _free_ engines calculating Rxc5 in ca. 1 minute or less:

This doesn't look convincing. Following this line it is obvious that
White is very bad. After 7...Bd6 8. Bxd6 (8. Bg3 Bxg3 9. fxg3 Qxg5)
8...Qxg5+ 9. Bg3 Qxd2 10. Qxa6 Be2 Shredder evaluates this as -2.93 for
White.

The idea of the sacrifice exchange is to install a knight at c4 which
covers all white weaknesses on the queenside while White has some play
on the kingside. Example 1. Rxc5 Bxc5 2. Ba4 0-0 3. Bxc6 bxc6 4. Nxh4
Bh7 5. Nc4 Bd6 6. Qg4. But if Black is careful it doesn't seem to work.
4...Bb4! 5. Nxg6 fxg6 6. Qb3+ (else sooner or later Black eliminates
the knight refuting the white strategy) 6...Kh7 7. Qxb4 Rxf4 and White
has a severe problem with g5 (8. Qc5 Rb8 plan Rb5).

After 4. Nc4 Bh5 White is stuck on the kingside and also has the problem
with g5.

To me the invitation 1. Ne5 Nxe5 2. Bxe5 Nxd3 3. Bxg7 Rh5 4. Ba4+ c6 5.
Rxc6 looks much more interesting. But Black can deny the sacrifice with
1...Bh5 2. Nxc6 bxc6 3. Qc2 0-0 and should be better.

Therefore White better settles for 1. Bc4. For example 1...Qd7 2. Kh2
Bh5 3. Qc2 with perhaps a small advantage for Black or 1...Nxa5 2. Qc2
or 2. Be5.

Default is there any doubt which chess engine is the strongest in the world....

It looks to me that chess engines are pretty much only doing simple
calculations and not doing very much positional evaluations

I have had good fun playing different chess engines against each other
or two instances of the same chess engine with different options

The real difference is only in how deep one engine is allowed to look
ahead and it is an enourmous time difference for various depths

It is a bit boring to play the beginnings because they are basically by
the book and the endings are often predicatble too

It is interesting to play one chess engine with depth 12 and another on
depth 16
It may take quite a lot of careful moves by both but usually the one
playing at depth 16 will make a good move and the otherone at depth 12
will not do the best defence
Worst thing is how long time this process takes

I was under the impression that games between engines are not
subject to a fixed ply depth search. Instead, their search ply
depth (horizon) varies from position to position during a game.

It depends on the engine and some of them at least allow you to set
fixed

"Fixed Depth: The computer will look ahead the specified number of
half-moves (one move by one side). The smaller the depth number, the
faster the search will complete (a search to depth 1 will take only a
fraction of a second). If the Fixed Depth option is selected, no limit
is set on how long you have to move when it is your turn."

I mostly use Arasan 8.4

It is free and very good

I used to play Arasan 2.1 and it was easy to beat
Arasan 8.4 is quite good
Most fun to let two instances play and try out different moves on the
12 depth one while the other depth 16 is calculating

depth 10 or 12 is ok depth 16 and higher is a bit too much to enjoy for
an afternoon
It may take a few days by going away inbetween

I find it more interesting no having them at the same level

It is also fun to play different engines against each other

At least let them play the first book moves

It is also good to have engines theat does not have book and you can
get more interesting beginnings

The first chess game I played against a computer - 34 years ago - I was
pretty convinced the computer would never be any good at playing chess

Now I see it only a matter of time

The chess engines are pretty slow on great depths but they keep getting
better and the computer faster
