I would like to buy a commercial chess program for intermediate play
and instruction. I value function, quality of design, and
reliability. And would just as well do without useless gimmicks. I

Given your stated requirement, you may consider buying both
CHESSMASTER and FRITZ! 8) This should give you plenty of
flexibility in taking advantage of each program's strong
features and avoiding their respective annoyances...
