Default ftp server question

There is a ftp nalimov tablebase. Can anyone tell me how to put this to use?
Is it meant for downloading? I don't think so, because it doesn't seem to
work that way. But can one consult this ftp-information, if needed?

Download, and configure your Nalimov-enabled chess engine to know
where the files have been placed. (You can also get many of the
files on DVD -- ChessBase sells them, and I believe there are
other sources as well.)

Yes, I've tried it that way, but then it doesn't work.
I've got the 3-4 men tablebase already on my software-disk, so I
experimented with it (I wanted to try the 3-4-5tbs, but it's 6 Gb orso)
When I try it with the 3-4 men tbs from the server (because it's smaller,
because of the download-time), my software doesn't pick up on it (where it
dóes work with the 3-4tbs from my own disc), even when I add the TBCheck and
TBGen, which are in the 3-4tbs-folder.
I'm aware that perhaps it won't work , because it's commercial. But I don't
understand why this ftp-server excists then.
Also, I was wondering if there's an online data/tablebase where you can
check endgame-positions that are already known in the tbs-collection (for
correspondence chess).

What software is this you are talking about?

The only thing I can think of is that the file *may* be named differently
on the FTP-server. You have ensured that the download went OK? Either use TBCheck
or MD5sum -- the md5 data is also on the FTP site.

I'm using Fritz -- I have no problem using either the files that come from
ChessBase, or files downloaded from the Crafty FTP site.

Because that's where Eugene Nalimov releases the files. Or was ... I'm not sure
what the status is today.

Well, I can't get it to work, unfortunately. The only thing I can think of
is, that it may have something to do with the windows version I'm using
(x64bit).
I use Shredder9/Fritz8, so it should have been allright, but it's not.
It would have been nice , though.
Thanks for the effort.
