It's a free country. A friendly introjection, if I may... USENET, of course, is not a country. It is a virtual space where written communications in various languages are posted. So far, direct censorship has not been attempted to curtail the _de facto_ (not _de jure_) freedom of expression on USENET! 8) The above notwithstanding, the dominant language used in some newsgroup or another is viewed by quite a few posters (lurkers as well ?) as an _implicit guarantee_ that all written com- munications will conform to widely accepted cultural norms as- sociated with the history and present realities of peoples whose mother tongue happens to be some variant of the one that is dominant in the newsgroup. Chess is not merely a logico-mathematical abstraction. It has its very own culture; hence, a newsgroup entitled "rec.games. chess.politics"... Now, the culture of chess is embedded in a broader cultural setting. Quite unexpectedly, I found that this broader cultural setting can trigger quite a bit of acri- mony around here. I cannot say that it is entirely a bad thing provided it does not swamp discussions specific to chess and its (narrowly apprehended) culture. |

Don't dance around the facts.

There could be any number of other reasons why those gentlemen have not commented. Perhaps they are quiet because (like me) they know nothing about this matter. Perhaps they consider Ms. Shahade well-qualified for the position. Perhaps the facts are not as you represent. |

Perhaps the facts are not as you represent.* Kudos to Kingston! Instead of trying to besmirch the characters of various icons in the chess world I, for one, would like to see more sensible posts like this from Kingston. But something smells fishy about Greg Shahade resigning so abruptly. Why is Joel Channing and the rest of the board so silent? Business as usual? |

Of course business as usual. Reforming the website is a good idea.
Giving it to an inexperienced family member of someone who is on the executive board is fishy, especially when the position was never opened to the public. If it is so important, why not have an open search process? That is why everyone is so quiet. There can be no answer. Schultz did it again. |

You get elected. You get your sister a good paying job without any web experience. You resign. Everyone wins. This is why chess is ****. This is a chess Newsgroup. Isn't there a US politics NG to post to? EZoto |

If Shahade can improve the website then USCF will be headed in the right direction again. If the USCF does not do this it is my opinion they will not survive. That being siad everyone should relax and enjoy some free chess on my site, http://www.chessmaniac.com Cheers. Wait a minute. You can't really believe that hiring shahade to improve the website wasn't going to bring questions of favoritism. You say relax. I believe a lot of members would like to know what they are paying for here. Ray Gordon is a moron but this question I believe is a legitamate question. 75,000 dollars a year ( if that is what it is ) is a lot of money especially in such a touchy situation. And besides he says she is the perfect person. How? There are chess members who are awesome web designers, programmers, business, etc, etc. Why the USCF doesn't reach out for some these guys is kind of unusual to me. EZoto |

If this is such an important position, no matter how much or little
does the position pay, there must be a nationwide search. Giving it to someone with no web experience or even professional experience is ludicrous. The only thing she has done beside playing chess is write the book Chess ****. This is obviously the job of big brother Shahade and Don Schultz. That is why Sloan, Parr, Innes are all so quiet about it. They have no answer and they simply can't justify this decision. |

I can call anyone a [xxxxx xxxx] if I wish. It's a free country.
I wonder if there is some doctrine relating to "fighting words" which holds the offender at risk of the consequences resulting from his words. Nope, but I can think of a few others, such as "incitement to riot" by making remarks like that to someone who is impersonating me, thus putting me at risk. |
