Hello There.
Are there any differences between the two? I'm thinking about buying Fritz 9. But only if there is some big improvements over Fritz 8. Can anybody advise? Thanks Tom |

Fritz 9 is somewhat stronger and does better analysis. `Somewhat stronger' being approximately 50 Elo points over Fritz 8, according to http://web.telia.com/~u85924109/ssdf/list.htm If you use Fritz to do analysis, it is worth it, if not, it depends on how much you want to have the latest version... Fritz 9 also has flashier graphics if that rocks your boat. Thanks Tom Move selection is based on more chess knowledge. Article here. For me, enough reason to buy 9, if not both (since you should be able to get 8 for under 20 bucks) http://www.chessbase.com/newsdetail.asp?newsid=2741 |

I believe that the developers have attempted to put more positional
analysis into the engine, where traditionaly they have only concerned themselves with tactics. Fritz 9 is also supposed to play a more "human" game (I cant comment, I have not developed the skill of human chess yet I still play like a Commodore 64), but if you are only concerned with using it for analyis the quality of the overnight anotation is much improved. I personaly think its a worthy upgrade, the guys at Chessbase do a sterling job and we consumers should encourage them to keep making great software by parting with our hard earned cash once in a while. I only wish I could get a copy that runs on my MacBook, as wonderfull as SCID and Crafty are. Fritz is the best for a patzer like me to understand what is going on in a game. Nic |
