Default Question on Shredder

Hello,

In its Analysis, Shredder evaluates lines with a strange (to me) notation

for example M150+, or M267--

Can anyone tell me what that means, I know it sees a mate, but its unclear
to me what its saying.
Thanx

Jim

I was wondering what that was about too. Someone told me it means the
computer sees the possibility of checkmate but it isn't sure in how
many moves that will occur so it gives the strange numbers you used as
an example. Of course if it is an obvious mating situation then it
gives you the exact moves to checkmate.

Mate in (at least) 150, and a fail-high (score will increase soon, i.e.
we will probably find a shorter mate soon).

or M267--

M stands for "Mate in". The numbers indicate that there is a mate "at
least
within 150 moves" but I don't know how absolute those figures are.

IIRC the + and - indicate a fail high and a fail low, either indicated
that
the engine found an even better situation in its PV than previously
thought
or even worse than thought before. In this case the engine indicates that
it
either has found a shorter or a longer mate, but isn't sure what that
shorter/longer route exactly is.
