Then, how can I order SCIDbase? dajava, You can't. The author has been incommunicado and the software evidently abandoned since April 2004. |

I hope that Shane's back in business, and won't disappear into the ether for a multi-year stretch again any time soon! |

Very odd isn't it? This is the only update that I see on the page: "News - May 2006 ScidBase CDs for May are being sent over the next week. I'm catching up on a backlog of email so please re-send if you sent a message and were expecting a reply." If this is Mr. Hudson doing the update then I can only guess that he has quite "a backlog of email" to catch up on. If it is Shane Hudson doing the update to the web page, then I wish you well Mr. Hudson. On the side of caution I personally would not donate money in the expectation of receiving SCIDbase until I were positive that this is Shane Hudson returned. The website has actually been cleaned up from old information. I hope is some sort of preparation for the future, really hope to see newer versions of scid. While you wait for scidbase news, you might get the 3.7 millions database from www.chesslib.no It's available for free, with some garbage in there, but lot of fun. -- Paolo |

Then supplement with current games from whatever source you wish --like twic or NIC. |

The author has been incommunicado and the software evidently abandoned since April 2004. Following the thread here in the newsgroup and also the chessx development list, I just wanted to say that according to my information Shane did _NOT_ abandon his software, especially not on purpose and also tough some posts here read like that he did (according to my information) not just grab the money and dissapper. However if you are searching "just" for some food for his great program you might want to check out TWIC e.g. where you can also download older issues: http://www.chesscenter.com/twic/zips/twic$1g.zip Just replace $1 by the number you want to retrieve. At least up till arround 210 (dating 1998) this is possible. How you can get quite a decent database on any unix system is "left as an exercise for the student", but think in the direction of "for()"... ![]() Also www.chesslib.no offered quite a good database but they seem to restructure their web presence right now. And of course one should not forget http://www.pitt.edu/~schach/Archives/ -- Kind regards, Alexander Wagner |

However, since the last modification to SCID itself was over two years ago, since other posters have reported that e-mail to Shane's address continues to bounce, since there is no report of ordered scidbases actually appearing, and since the only real change to the SCID homepage in May 2006 is a cleanup and removal of the last news (and development timetable) dated April _2004_, eager purchasers might do wish to keep their cash in their pockets until they're sure that this is really Shane and that he's really back. I hope he is --2 plus years is a long time to be away. It was in the belief that SCID had been abandoned that projects like ChessX (i.e. "NewSCID") were started. |
