Or try Virtual PC.

Doesn't cost much either.

Powerful Virtual Machine Software for the Technical Professional
VMware Workstation is powerful desktop virtualization software for
software developers/testers and enterprise IT professionals that runs

http://bochs.sourceforge.net/

This is small and free.
But, it is difficult to use.

It is also *very* slow.

It's an interpreter / simulator, and as such it has about a 100 to 1 slow
down.

He could also try Qemu or VirtualBox. Both are emulators that virtualize
the hardware and can run the program on the real cpu. As such, you can get
much closer to normal performance.

XenSource is free and fast. I'm thinking of switching from VMWare.

Why would you want to do that? You still won't get "real time" that many
people hope for.

Try FreeDOS.

I hardly think he'd want to wipe his whole hard drive just so he could
install FreeDos or OpenDos / DR Dos.

He'd be better off installing one of the virtual machines, such as Virtual
PC 2007 (just released), VMWare, Qemu or VirtualBox (which is based on
qemu).

You won't get 100% performance, but it will be 75%+ for cpu bound stuff.

(Qemu has two modes. An emulator mode which emulates the cpu, which lets
you run x86 stuff on other architectures, giving about a 10% performance,
and a 'native' x86 mode which uses a system kernel driver that lets the
program run on the real cpu.)

I installed Virtual Box
and run Rebel for DOS
(after installing DOS 6.22 within Virtual Box)

It worked out

http://www.ezbsystems.com/ultraiso/index.html

I used ultraiso to get rebel12.iso from rebel12.zip
as this computer does not have a CD-ROM drive.

And I used a dos command called 'xcopy'
to copy all the files and folder in rebel12.iso
to c drive of DOS.

For some reasons, I cannot use mouse within Rebel.
That means I have to try this free mouse drive for dos.
(I could play some moves against Rebel with keyboard.)
