I downloaded the free database in CBV. format. Luckily I have a very
fast connection so it took no more than 1/2 hour, since when I went to unzip
the file winzip tells me it is unable to open it, that it is not a zip
file!? Yet checking the dos name and what not it certainly appears to
be...winzip has given me no problems before, I unzip chess files all the
time. Any idea whats going on here?

Scid use a subset of games from the database
to generate the player report. For more information
on how Scid is generating reports, you can download
the software (http://scid.sourceforge.net/) and consult
the program's help-file.

handles all of them, so he might want to give it a try for decompression:

Otherwise he may have an incomplete or corrupted download. An easy way to
verify a download is to check that the number of bytes is correct, but the
more reliable is something like a MD5 checksum.

I only add MD5 checksums to critical files like the Nalimov's. For files
100MB you will find the exact file size in the "File info.box" on
the download page.

When new file are uploaded to the server, I always make a download
to make sure that the file is OK - I consider the file to be OK given
that an old version of WinZip and WinRAR are able to open the
archive.

If a zip-file that you have downloaded refuse to open, the first
thing to suspect is that something vent wrong during the
download - not that the file on the server is corrupt. In most
cases a new download will solve the problem.

If you are on a slow connection, my advice is to use a
download manager, like GetRight, or something similar
that gives you the opportunity to resume the download
if it fails.

The published report (from Chesslib site!) shows that the newest games
are from 1994-5 !!! :

And regarding the main commercial Chesslib database, its quality seems
to be rather poor. It was an interesting base as long as it was free.

I could not recommend to buy it.

I compared some of its published features (from
http://www.chesslib.no/reportmain.htm) with those of my main personal
database which has been assembled from various sources over the years :

For those who wish to build a very good database for free, all the
required stuff is available on those wonderful sites who did not go
commercial (The Week in Chess, Lars Balzer's site).

So please, Mr Fredriksen, stop trying to sell your mediocre stuff in
chess newsgroups by mean of a ridiculous free offer!
