Hi,
At http://members.home.nl/matador/chess...#KING%20SAFETY I saw this table: +----+----+----+----+-----+----+---+----+ Initialize COUNTER: 8 | 02 | 00 | 00 | 00 | 00 | 00 | 00 | 02 | +----+----+----+----+----+----+----+----+ COUNTER = TABLE [black_king]; 7 | 02 | 01 | 01 | 01 | 01 | 01 | 01 | 02 | +----+----+----+----+----+----+----+----+ This will avoid the black king 6 | 04 | 03 | 03 | 03 | 03 | 03 | 03 | 04 | to enter the center, as soon +----+----+----+----+----+----+----+----+ as white has a little pressure 5 | 04 | 04 | 04 | 04 | 04 | 04 | 04 | 04 | on the squares surrounding Kd5 +----+----+----+----+----+----+----+----+ the score will go over 1 or 2 4 | 04 | 04 | 04 | 04 | 04 | 04 | 04 | 04 | pawns with ease. +----+----+----+----+----+----+----+----+ 3 | 04 | 04 | 04 | 04 | 04 | 04 | 04 | 04 | Also, squares like H7, H8 are +----+----+----+----+----+----+----+----+ set a bit higher because there 2 | 04 | 04 | 04 | 04 | 04 | 04 | 04 | 04 | are less surrounding squares +----+----+----+----+----+----+----+----+ on the black king, this will 1 | 04 | 04 | 04 | 04 | 04 | 04 | 04 | 04 | avoid moves like Kg8-h8 when +----+----+----+----+----+----+----+----+ there is absolutely no need a b c d e f g h Now I was wondering: is this table a generic one? E.g.: are these values a general known fact? And if so: do they also exists for the other pieces and for the other color? Where? Where? You are looking at REBEL's king safety progressive evaluation prefill table. Of *course* it is speciific to REBEL. Other programs address king safety differently. -- Guy Macon http://www.guymacon.com/ |

E.g.: are these values a general known fact? And if so: do they also exists for the other pieces and for the other color? Where? It is only true for the King whilst there is some protection from friendly pawns and/or defensive pieces. Downgrading a8,h8,a7,h7 scores is a kludge to stop King shuffling when the program is a bit lost. Different programs have other means of encoding King safety. And there are standard openings where Kh8 is necessary... The right table varies with the stage of the game and what other material is present. The King safety table is pretty much reversed when you get down to KXX vs K endgames. The lone King must in general stay as close to the centre of the board with as much mobility preserved as possible if he is to survive. Going to the edge of the board makes it a helpmate problem. Inbetween there is a gradual transition as pieces get swapped off where the King must become more active to hold onto pawns and territory. Regards, Martin Brown |
