I tried again with 256MB Hash tables, but again 10-0 to Fritz8.

To make sure I wasn't being dumb as many of you hinted at, I set up a
Fritz8-Fritz7 match. The result was 26.5-23.5 to Fritz8. ?!?

This is just a stab in the dark, but did you make sure that permanent brain
was turned OFF for both? That will have a rather dramatic impact.

Can someone explain that? Set up a 40 game match before bed last night,

both

with 512Mbyte Hash Tables running on Pentium IV 3.2GHz. I woke up

expecting

a closer match than the 38-2 thrashing Fritz 8 dealt out to Shredder 8.

No

draws, and the 2 games Shredder 8 won were when it was playing white.

Game format was the default Fritz Blitz 4' 2". Perhaps I'll try the
long
game, as the engines probably aren't making full use of the hash tables

with

the Blitz game.

This is poor by any standard, can anyone tell me what Shredder 8 is
good

for

again?

that is not a valid result, something must have set up wrong...

K, thanks for all your great input!

Going back to Shredder8, it was newly installed so I tried a reinstall
but
it still couldn't live with Fritz8. So before pointing out that the
problem
is the user, or is located between the computer and the seat try
explaining
the Fritz8 - Fritz7 result.

Another posibility. Is your copy of Shredder 8 engine legit? The
programmer has the engine play poorly after the 16th or 25th move,(I
forget which) if you are using a warezed copy.

Yeahh, well... Something's wrong, no doubt! My S8 wouldn't alow that!!
Even without the book it does nicely at playchess.com.

Got it sorted, after an exchange of emails with the bods at Chessbase;

uninstalling Shredder,
deleting the contents of the folder C:\WINDOWS\Prefetch
reinstalling Shredder,

Seemed to fix the problem. Result after 100 games: +38 =28 -34 in favour of
Fritz!
