Can someone explain that? Set up a 40 game match before bed last night, both
with 512Mbyte Hash Tables running on Pentium IV 3.2GHz. I woke up expecting a closer match than the 38-2 thrashing Fritz 8 dealt out to Shredder 8. No draws, and the 2 games Shredder 8 won were when it was playing white. Game format was the default Fritz Blitz 4' 2". Perhaps I'll try the long game, as the engines probably aren't making full use of the hash tables with the Blitz game. This is poor by any standard, can anyone tell me what Shredder 8 is good for again? ![]() |

That's too much hash for blitz. Try less.
It has been shown that Shredder 8 is variable depending on hash size, so you might have to run the tournament at several different hash sizes to find the optimum. One test I saw indicated that 256MB hash was optimum for Shredder 8, but that could depend on the machine. One thing is for sure - it is almost impossible to reproduce any results with Shredder 8! It is obviously optimized to win the SSDF matches, and nothing else... -E "Psiloz" wrote in message t... Can someone explain that? Problem is located between your computer and your seat.

K, thanks for all your great input! ![]() I tried again with 256MB Hash tables, but again 10-0 to Fritz8. To make sure I wasn't being dumb as many of you hinted at, I set up a Fritz8-Fritz7 match. The result was 26.5-23.5 to Fritz8. ?!? Going back to Shredder8, it was newly installed so I tried a reinstall but it still couldn't live with Fritz8. So before pointing out that the problem is the user, or is located between the computer and the seat try explaining the Fritz8 - Fritz7 result. Psiloz |

IIf I may speculate, playing two engines on the same computer may be
misleading if one of them is running the game. I dont know if this is true, but for example, Fritz may be keeping its hash table between moves and erasing Shredders, or not be optimized to run the Shredder software under Fritz, or the two programs may not be equivalent when sharing the resources, or if one wants to be paranoiac, maybe the Fritz programmers put in a routine to screw up shredder... On the other hand, maybe you forgot and left Shredder in one of the easier settings where it intentionally makes mistakes. Henri |

Is your copy of Shredder 8 engine legit? The programmer has the engine play poorly after the 16th or 25th move,(I forget which) if you are using a warezed copy. |

It looks like a book problem, that it plays the same losing/winning lines
again and again. I think one should use the Nunn's tables, though they are not perfect, while one engine might already have learning. |
