What's the difference between "Shredder Classic" and "Shredder 8"?
Shredder Classic looks like a good deal at $30 but if Shredder 8 is stronger I'd rather have that instead Shredder Classic has its' own interface and offers some interesting features not found on other programs, such as "Triple Brain" and an Endgame Oracle, which are interesting. It seems to operate at a slower analysis rate than Shredder8, but I'm not sure what that means, in overall context. Some programs like Hiarcs operate more slowly too, but that just indicates it's evaluating using positional chess knowledge - I don't know if that's true with Shredder Classic or not. The Shredder Classic engine will run in any interface that supports UCI protocol, so it runs in Fritz8, etc. Has a nice English-language help file as well. If you're curious, why don't you download Shredder Classic and try it out? While there are limitations on the unregistered version, they allow you to see what the program does. If you don't like it, uninstall it. If you like it, it's only $30. The registered version also gets a nice sized and effective 86MB probably-tweaked (just a suspicion) opening book. If you play chess against it, I think its very good. It plays a good, realistic game of chess. If you're only looking for a top engine vs engine machine, it might not suit you. Just one guy's opinion. Regards. |
