There is a lot of off-topic stuff, a lot of cross posting from the chess politics etc. groups and so on. Even some people who do have posts that are somewhat computer chess related tend to cross-post enough to show they don't understand newsgroups. That's what 99% of the people who care about computer chess have left and prefer more moderated environments. Many of the 'old timers' flatly refuse to come back to even lurk. Too many years of personal attacks, too much spam, too much sam sloan, etc. Too many newbies who just don't understand the culture of newsgroups. |

Many ISPs have dropped their news server feed altogether. Many of the 'old timers' flatly refuse to come back to even lurk. Too many years of personal attacks, too much spam, too much sam sloan, etc. You can get rid of most of it with suitable kill file entries but it doesn't leave much on topic traffic. Too many newbies who just don't understand the culture of newsgroups. But too few of them to sustain interesting discussions ![]() Regards, Martin Brown |

That's what 99% of the people who care about computer chess have left and prefer more moderated environments. Can you give some links to those? There are lots of forums, actually. Some are in other languages, of course. And about every major program has its own forum. And there are lots of other scattered forums. Just google for them. The top general purpose computer chess forum is probably the Computer Chess Club at TalkChess.com http://www.talkchess.com/forum/viewf..._view=flat&f=7 with old archives at: http://www.stmintz.com/ccc/ (There are years & years of incredibly interesting posts in the archives. They can be lots of fun to search through. Just like searching through the old rgcc archives are.) The Winboard programmer's forum also used to see quite a bit of activity, but I think most of those eventually moved to the forum above. This is where a lot of the 'magic' bitboard stuff was done. http://www.open-aurec.com/wbforum/vi...hp?f=4&start=0 (Incidentally, both forums have other, non-programming computer chess forums. General discussion, tournaments, winboard itself, etc. I just pointed you to the programming sub-forum itself.) As I said, there are lots of computer chess forums. Just google for them and pick one you like. But the TalkChess / Computer Chess Club one is, in my opinion, one of the better ones, and certainly one of the bigger ones. If the 70's computer chess scene had a discussion medium as active as the CCC forum is, by 79 computer chess would have been at 2500. (grin) |
