Chess software - where to start? by
42N83W
Windows XP Pro SP2
I posted in rec.games.chess.analysis last night, and they suggested I might
get better recommendations here. Anyway, I just got back into chess with
some office mates but I don't own a single piece of chess software. So if
one is not new to chess but is new to chess software, where should I start?
I'm not against spending some money on software (eventually), but for now
I'd...

Looking for SAN.tar.gz by
Bob Kline
The FAQ for this newsgroup makes reference to a programming tool kit
named the Standard Algebraic Notation Kit, and provides a link to the
package on a server which no longer exists (ics.onenet.net). Does
anyone have a copy of this package (or a link to a live site which has a
copy)?
Thanks!

Very cheap Fritz 9 on amazon and others, is it for real? by
MPW
I just wondered if the Fritz 9 advertised on amazon for £17 is the real PC
version. The box illustration looks quite different from the box shown on
the chess.co.uk site, i.e. blue colour instead of largely red tints. Same
'blue version' on some other sites. Half price, anyone confirm it's the real
thing?
Cheers, Mike

6 Man Tablebases in CB9 by
Carl Tillotson
Will 6-man tablebases work with CB9/Fritz8 family?
The reason for asking is that the most common ending (according to some
stats, which I have not tested) is krppkr which occurs in 14% of games
(from a 2m db iirc).
However, since the file is 4.35gb, and comes in six parts, I was
wondering whether it will actually work in 32bit land (if at all).
Am I downloading the 4.35gb for no good reason at...

Question on Shredder by
Jim King
Hello,
In its Analysis, Shredder evaluates lines with a strange (to me) notation
for example M150+, or M267--
Can anyone tell me what that means, I know it sees a mate, but its unclear
to me what its saying.
Thanx

Fritz Engine Issues by
FunkyBassman
I am considering purchasing Fritz but during some reaearch I have become
aware of problems using various (though not all engines).
From what I can gather a lot of engines produce an "Unknown Error" message
if you try to use them on a system where Fritz is installed anwhere other
than C: (an exception to this rule being Crafty).
Now whilst I dont want to get in a slagging match, if this is the...

CB9 - "Source" field out of sync by
hugh_brodie@hotmail.com
I have two versions of a 2.5 million game database - created about a
month apart. During that month, I added about 60,000 games and added
comments to the "Source" fields in a couple of hundred of them. I
checked for dups and removed deleted games, but somewhere along the
line the "source" field got out of sync.
When I compare the "Sources" in the two databases, I notice that a
source which had...

multiple engines - two questions - analysis strength by
harmless64@gmail.com
1.
I like to look over GM games with 2-3 engines running. that way, I get
a sense of different engine "personalities." it's cool and SEEMS
illuminating.
I wonder though if I'm getting really dumbed down analysis. How much
weaker would Hiarcs, Fritz, and Junior all running together really be?
In other words, am I better off running just one at a time?

Training software by
Henri H. Arsenault
There is a lot of good training software, and I have much of it.
But my favorites are CT-ART 2.0 and Personal Chess Trainer.(I bought
both programs and have no relation to the producers).
These 2 programs have in common that they they are tactics training
programs that show you a problem and you have to find the best
move(s).But they are also different.
CT Art 2.0 has problems grouped...

Kosteniuk to appear in the May issue of Penthouse by
Sam Sloan
Congratulations to Mrs. Kosteniuk! Both Manakova and Kosteniuk have
publicly stated that they very much enjoy giving heads. They said they
like the attention they get from men when they perform oral sex. When
asked if they spit or swallow, they prefer the second one. We also have
Jennifer Shahade stating that she lusts for her female and male
opponents in threesome arrangements. Who wants to be...

Computer for chess analysis by
Ange1o DePa1ma
I'm aware that the major programs all suffer from a horizon effect, which as
I understand it means they cannot see beyond a certain move. I demonstrated
this is so on my machine with a certain endgame position that required a
queen exchange and outflanking over 7-8 moves. I saw this sortie and played
it, but Shredder 7 takes quite a bit of time (on my machine) to see the
winning...

Best Training Software? by
Thomas T. Veldhouse
I am looking to find the best value in training software. Currently, I tend
to read through books, but I find it rather annoying to setup a board and
parse the notation for each example. It is tedious and doesn't play well in a
mobile setting. So, I am thinking of doing some training on the computer. I
note that ChessMaster X has a lot of training material. I am a owner of Fritz
8 and I...
